gTLD FAQs

Using a computer keyboard to preregister your new gTLD.
What is a TLD?
TLD stands for Top Level Domain. In a URL such as easy.living.com, 'easy' is the third-level domain name, 'living' is the second-level domain name, and the top-level domain name would be '.com'.
Are there different types of TLDs?
Yes. There are two easily identified types of TLDs: the generic Top Level Domain (gTLD), and the country code and Internationalised country code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs and IDN ccTLDs). Basically, any TLD with 3 characters or more is considered a gTLD, whereas a ccTLD refers to a TLD with a 2-letter domain established for a specific country or territory, and an IDN ccTLD refers to a language-native ccTLD.
What is a Brand gTLD?
A brand gTLD refers to the creation of a Top Level Domain using your company brand, such as .nike, .coke, .sony. Currently Instra is offering a FREE application process for all brand gTLDs. Terms and conditions apply, contact us for more information.
Can I apply for more than one gTLD?
Yes. Unfortunately, each application is considered independently, therefore you will need to apply (and pay the applicable fees) separately in each case. This is also true for variations of similar TLDs.
Is pre-registering domains free?
Yes. We do require an active email account and a valid postal address in order for us to confirm your pre-registration, however there are no fees involved in this process.
How much will it cost to apply for a new gTLD?
Although the final ICANN guidelines have yet to be approved and released, current estimates stand at US$185,000 for the evaluation process, with a further US$5,000 deposit fee payable per registration when applying. The US$5,000 will be credited against the evaluation fee. Other fees may apply depending on the specific application path.
Are there ongoing costs after I have registered my new TLD?
Yes. Once you have successfully registered your new TLD, you will be asked to sign a New gTLD Agreement (also known as a Registry Agreement). The fees included in this agreement are: a quarterly payment of US$6250.00, and a transaction fee of US$0.25. The transaction fee will not apply until there are over 50,000 domain names registered in your gTLD.
